What it is
A firm chewy fruit gum, glossy rather than dusted, in deep colours and with a slower chew than a jelly baby. The flavours are a little more grown up, blackcurrant, lemon, orange, lime and port style dark red.

Where it comes from
Wine gums were created by Charles Gordon Maynard in England in the early twentieth century, in a family that was strictly teetotal. The story told in the trade is that his father initially refused to make a sweet with wine in the name at all. The name refers to the flavours and the idea of savouring them slowly, the way you would a wine, not to any alcohol. Some versions carry words like port and claret stamped on them, which is where most of the confusion comes from.
What it's made of
Sugar, glucose syrup and modified maize starch cooked to a firmer set than a jelly baby, with beef and pork gelatine, flavoured with fruit juices from concentrate and coloured with anthocyanins, paprika extract and curcumin.
