Wine Gums have never contained wine and never will, and the name has caused more confusion than any sweet in Britain. What they are is a firm, dense fruit gum that takes a good while to get through, in a run of flavours from lemon and orange through lime and grape to blackcurrant and raspberry, each one stamped with a word on top.
Taveners make these, and there's 1% real fruit juice in the recipe with all the colours coming from anthocyanins, paprika, curcumin, safflower, elderberry and spirulina. So the reds and purples look the colour of actual fruit.
They're the anchor of any traditional mix with Midget Gems, Football Gums and Jelly Babies, and the best sweet for a long drive because one lasts the length of a junction. Grown ups buy these for themselves.
Contains beef and pork gelatine, so not suitable for vegetarians.
