What it is
A mixture of tiny fondant shapes and small jellies in pastel colours, cubes, rounds, and little sugar coated jellies. Soft, sweet and gentle, with no single flavour dominating. The sweet people describe as tasting like childhood.

Where it comes from
Dolly mixtures are a British creation of the early twentieth century, sold as a mixture from the start rather than a single sweet. The fondant pieces come from a much older tradition of sugar paste confectionery, and combining several shapes into one bag was a way of using up the variety a factory produced. The name most likely comes from them being small enough for a doll.
What it's made of
Two families of sweet in one bag. The fondant pieces are sugar and glucose syrup worked until smooth and set in shapes. The jellies are set with beef gelatine and sugar coated. Colours are mostly from fruit and plant concentrates.
