What it is
A hard shelled ball of bubblegum in bright colours. The shell cracks, the gum softens, and the flavour is intense for about ninety seconds before it settles into a long chew.

Where it comes from
The gumball machine appeared in America around 1907 and made the round gumball the most familiar shape of gum in the world. The shell is made by panning, the same method used for jelly beans and sugared almonds, which is what makes them shiny and lets them roll through a machine without sticking.
What it's made of
A gum base, which is the part that does not dissolve, mixed with sugar, glucose syrup, flavour and soya lecithin, then rolled into balls and panned with layers of sugar syrup until a hard shell forms. The shine is a glaze of carnauba wax, beeswax and shellac.
