What it is
A large hard ball with a strawberry flavoured shell and a piece of bubblegum at the centre. You suck your way through the shell to reach the gum, which takes a while.

Where it comes from
The jawbreaker is the American cousin of the gobstopper, made the same way but usually larger and often with a gum centre. Adding gum to the middle was an American innovation that gave a second act to a sweet designed to last.
What it's made of
A piece of gum base is panned with layer after layer of flavoured sugar syrup until a thick shell is built, then polished and glazed.
