Where it comes from
The brownie is American, first appearing in print in a Chicago cookbook around 1896, and it reached Britain properly only in the later twentieth century. Combining it with fudge is a modern British invention driven by the independent fudge trade, where richness is the selling point.
What it's made of
A fudge made on a soya drink base with chocolate flavouring, with a ribbon of nougat made from icing sugar, cornflour, gelatine and palm kernel oil. Not suitable for vegetarians.
