Where it comes from
Mince pies really did contain meat once, from the medieval period through to the Victorian era, when the meat gradually disappeared and only the suet, fruit and spices remained. The spice mix is a survival of the medieval habit of using expensive imported spices to show off at Christmas.
What it's made of
A condensed milk fudge with raisins and mixed spice flavouring folded through before setting.
