Where it comes from
Liquorice wheels come from the tradition of extruded liquorice, made possible when machinery could push a soft liquorice paste through a shaped die. They were a penny sweet standard across Europe and the wheel shape exists because a coil is the easiest way to store a long rope in a small space.
What it's made of
Wheat flour, glucose fructose syrup, molasses, sugar and liquorice extract mixed into a paste, extruded as a rope and wound into a wheel.
