Where it comes from
Cartridges are cut lengths of the same extruded rope used for wheels and pencils, and cutting them short was simply a way to sell the format loose rather than as a single long piece. The rainbow colours are a modern addition aimed at children.
What it's made of
Sugar, glucose and fructose syrup and wheat flour extruded as a filled rope and cut into short lengths, coloured with a range of food colours.
