Nobody is neutral about aniseed. If you love it, Aniseed Crunch Chews are the black chews you remember, with a strong, warm aniseed flavour from real aniseed oil, freeze dried until they puff up light and shatter when you bite. If you don't love it, more for the rest of us.
Freeze drying takes the chews to well below zero and then pulls the water out under vacuum, so each one swells with tiny air pockets and turns from a slow chew into a quick crunch. The aniseed oil doesn't go anywhere, so the flavour comes through stronger. The black colour is vegetable carbon.
