What it is
A soft strawberry flavoured gum rolled in fine sugar. Sweet rather than sour, with a slight tingle from the coating and a jammy strawberry flavour underneath. One of the sweets people buy without thinking about it.
Taste

Where it comes from
Strawberry was one of the first fruit flavours confectioners could make convincingly, because the compounds that give strawberry its smell were among the earliest to be identified and recreated in the nineteenth century. Sugar coated strawberry gums have been a fixture of British sweet shops since the mid twentieth century and belong to the same family as the giant strawberries and strawberry bon bons sold beside them.
What it's made of
Glucose syrup, sugar and starch set in a strawberry mould, flavoured and coloured, then tumbled in sugar. The coating is there for texture and to stop them sticking, not for sourness.
