Where it comes from
Heart shaped sweets belong to the Valentine's tradition that grew through the nineteenth century, when boxed chocolates in heart shaped boxes were first sold. The small moulded heart is the everyday version, sold loose all year and in far larger numbers in February.
What it's made of
A white compound coating of sugar, vegetable fat and whey powder coloured pink with carmine or beetroot, deposited into heart moulds.
