What it is
Tiny firm fruit gums in six colours, chewier and denser than a wine gum, with a liquorice black one that people either pick out first or leave behind. A northern sweet shop fixture.

Where it comes from
Midget gems are a smaller, firmer relative of the wine gum, developed in Britain in the early twentieth century and associated particularly with Yorkshire, where Lion Confectionery of Cleckheaton made them famous. They were sold as a sweet you could make last, which mattered when sweets were rationed or bought by the ounce.
What it's made of
Sugar, glucose syrup and starch boiled to a very firm set with gelatine, flavoured with fruit and liquorice, glazed for shine.
