Where it comes from
M&M's were created in America in 1941 by Forrest Mars, who had seen soldiers in the Spanish Civil War eating chocolate pellets coated in a hard shell so they would not melt in the heat. The shell was the whole point, and the sweets were sold to the American military during the Second World War before reaching civilians. Peanut M&M's followed in 1954.
What it's made of
A milk chocolate centre panned with layers of sugar syrup until a hard shell forms, coloured yellow, polished and printed with the letter m.
