What it is
A dense chewy log with a cocoa flavour, somewhere between a toffee and a chocolate but genuinely neither. It does not melt, which was always the point.

Where it comes from
Leo Hirschfeld began making Tootsie Rolls in New York in 1896, naming them after his daughter Clara, whose nickname was Tootsie. They were among the first penny sweets individually wrapped by machine, and they were included in American soldiers' rations in both world wars and in Korea because they survived heat and cold when chocolate could not.
What it's made of
Sugar, corn syrup, palm oil, condensed skim milk and cocoa, with a portion of the previous day's batch mixed into each new one, a technique the company has used for over a century.
