What it is
Small pressed sugar beads threaded on elastic, worn round the neck and bitten off one at a time. Chalky, mildly fruity, and more toy than sweet.

Where it comes from
Candy necklaces come from the American penny counter of the mid twentieth century, where sweets that doubled as toys sold better than sweets that did not. They arrived in Britain through imported novelty sweets and became a party bag standard.
What it's made of
Dextrose and glucose syrup compressed into small beads with flavour and colour, then threaded onto elastic by machine.
