Poor Bens are a mystery to anyone under forty. A bag of small, firm gums in an assortment of shapes and colours, some fruity, some liquorice, some both at once, with a chew that's on the harder side and lasts. The fruit ones are surprisingly good, and the liquorice ones have a proper aniseed bite.
They're made by Lion, the same people as Fruit Salads and Midget Gems, and the recipe is far more generous than the name suggests. It has juice concentrates from nine fruits, apple jam, liquorice extract and aniseed oil, with the colours from plants like safflower, spirulina and paprika.
They belong in a traditional bag with Black Jacks and Liquorice Gums, or with Aniseed Twists for a mix that leans properly into the aniseed. One for a grandparent, or for anyone who likes a sweet with some history.
Contains beef gelatine, so not suitable for vegetarians.
