The sweet shop jar that never ran out. Liquorice Comfits are short, thick sticks of firm liquorice wrapped in a crunchy sugar shell, in pink, yellow, orange, white and pale blue. You bite through the crisp coating into a dense, treacly liquorice with a warm hint of aniseed, and the two textures together are the reason people who don't even like liquorice keep coming back.
Taveners make these, and the recipe is a traditional one: wheat flour, sugar and treacle for the liquorice, liquorice extract and aniseed oil for the flavour, and plant colours like anthocyanin, curcumin, safflower and spirulina for the shells. No artificial dyes.
Put them in with Jelly Sprogs, Liquorice Wheels and Black Jacks and you've built a liquorice lover's bag.
Made without gelatine, so suitable for vegetarians. Contains wheat (gluten). Not suitable for children under 36 months due to the choking risk.
