Sour first, sweet second, lemon all the way through. Lemonheads are small round hard sweets with a sharp, tangy lemon shell that softens into a sweeter centre as you go. They're built in layers, panned like a jawbreaker, and there's real lemon juice in the recipe, which is why they taste of lemon rather than of yellow.
They're the genuine American version of a sweet that's been going since 1962, one of the great American corner shop sweets and still a cinema favourite. The shine comes from a light glaze.
Pair them with Sherbet Lemons for lemon across two countries, Jolly Ranchers for a hard candy bag, or Mike and Ike Sour for a sour American selection.
