What it is
A large ring gummy in bands of colour, soft and sweet with mixed fruit flavours. Bought as much for how it looks as how it tastes, which is why it does well on camera.
Taste
Where it comes from
Multi colour deposit technology made striped and banded gummies possible at scale in the 1990s, and the rainbow ring is the showpiece of that process. It has had a second life on social media, where sweets that photograph well sell better than sweets that simply taste good.
What it's made of
Several colours of gum deposited into one mould in quick succession so the bands fuse without mixing, set with gelatine, dried, then glazed or sugar coated.
