Where it comes from
Milk bottle sweets date from the era when milk actually arrived on the doorstep in glass bottles, and the shape was instantly readable to any British child. They belong to a family of foam and chew sweets that used dairy flavours, which became popular in the mid twentieth century when condensed and dried milk were cheap and widely used in confectionery.
What it's made of
Glucose syrup, sugar and sweetened condensed milk set with cornflour and beef gelatine in a bottle mould, with a creamy milk flavour.
