Where it comes from
Gummy worms were introduced by Trolli in Germany in 1981 and were deliberately designed to be a bit revolting, which children loved. The sour coated version arrived with the wave of sour sweets in the 1990s and now outsells the plain one in most British shops.
What it's made of
Two colours of gum deposited in a long mould, set with beef gelatine, dried and then coated in sugar with citric and malic acid.
