Where it comes from
The chocolate button is a product of the moulding and depositing machinery that appeared in the nineteenth century, which could deposit thousands of identical drops an hour. They have been a British children's sweet ever since, sold loose, in bags and as buttons.
What it's made of
A compound coating of sugar, palm fat, whey powder, wheat flour and fat reduced cocoa powder deposited as drops onto a cooled belt and allowed to set. No moulding needed, the drop shape is simply how a blob settles.
