Jelly Sprogs are the sweet nobody can describe and everybody recognises. Small, soft aniseed jellies, rolled in tiny crunchy sugar strands so every bite is crunch first and chew second, in pink, white and yellow. Old fashioned, a bit odd, and quietly addictive.
They're made by Barratt and the recipe is short: sugar, glucose, starch, gelatine and real aniseed oil, with the colours coming from blackcurrant, carrot and spirulina. They've been made that way for decades and they'd be worse if anyone modernised them.
They're an aniseed sweet, so they belong with Liquorice Comfits and Black Jacks in a bag for someone who likes that side of the counter. Add Aniseed Twists and you've got a full aniseed jar for a grandparent.
Contains beef gelatine, so not suitable for vegetarians.
