If pick n mix had a captain, it would be the cola bottle. Fizzy Cola Bottles are the chewy brown cola bottle rolled in a sour, fizzy sugar that makes your mouth water before the cola gets going. The chew is firm, the cola is proper cola, and the sour fades just in time for the next one.
These are Barratt's, one of the oldest names in British sweets, and there's a little grape juice from concentrate in the recipe, which gives a rounded fruitiness under the cola. Caramel syrup gives the colour.
They go with everything, which is the point. Fizzy Cherry Cola Bottles and Happy Cola Bottles for a cola family, Fizzy Bubblegum Bottles for the classic pairing, or a scoop on their own for a long film.
