Here's the trick: put them in the freezer, then snap them. Charleston Chew is a long, soft, chewy vanilla nougat wrapped in a thin milk chocolate flavoured coating, and frozen it shatters into shards that melt slowly. At room temperature it's a proper stretchy chew that lasts for ages.
It's the genuine US made version, named after the dance craze of the 1920s when it launched in 1925, and it's one of America's oldest surviving candy bars. These are the mini size, so you can freeze a handful and ration them.
Pair them with Tootsie Roll and Cow Tales for a retro American chew bag, or with Hershey's Kisses for a chocolate one.
