There are sweets for children and sweets for people who have earned them. Blackcurrant Liquorice is the second sort. A hard, deep purple blackcurrant shell that you suck down to a softer aniseed centre, so you get sharp fruit for a couple of minutes and then the warm, slightly smoky liquorice takes over and stays.
The centre is made with treacle and sweetened condensed milk, which is why it goes soft and toffee like rather than staying glassy, and the aniseed comes from real aniseed oil. These were always in the jars at the back of the shop.
Pair them with Aniseed Twists and Winter Mixture for a bag of proper old school flavours, or add Pear Drops to lighten it. A desk drawer sweet for people with opinions.
Made without gelatine, suitable for vegetarians. Contains milk and soya. Contains the colour E122, which may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children.
