Army and Navy were the sweet you were given for a sore throat and kept taking long after it had cleared up. Small, black and glossy, with a warming flavour that sits somewhere between liquorice, aniseed and a herbal lozenge. They are not sweet in the modern sense. They are dark, grown up and quietly addictive.
The name goes back to the days when they were sold as a soothing sweet for servicemen, and they still have that old chemist's shop character. Ours are made by Stockley's, and the colour comes from vegetable carbon rather than anything animal derived.
They make sense next to Aniseed Balls and Liquorice Twists for a dark, herbal bag, and they are a proper part of any Winter Mixture style selection. Keep a few in your coat for the walk home in November.
