Where it comes from
Tongue staining sweets are a modern British novelty built on the same idea as Black Jacks turning tongues black, but with colours chosen for maximum visibility. They sell in waves driven by playground word of mouth and now by video.
What it's made of
Sugar, glucose syrup and wheat starch with modified starches, lactic, malic and citric acid, acidity regulators and a heavy loading of brilliant blue.
