Pontefract

A Yorkshire town that grew its own liquorice.

The story

Pontefract in West Yorkshire grew liquorice for centuries, the plant having been introduced to the area at some point in the medieval period, possibly by monks. The soil suited it, and at the industry's height several factories in the town made nothing else. The Pontefract cake, a flat stamped liquorice disc, is named after it, and the town still holds a liquorice festival. It is the reason liquorice is a British sweet at all.
