Where it comes from
Wax lips and novelty teeth go back to the American penny counter of the early twentieth century, made from paraffin wax and later from gum. The gummy version arrived once moulding got good enough to hold the detail, and the British version became a Halloween staple.
What it's made of
A two colour gum deposit, red for the gums and white for the teeth, set with wheat starch and modified maize and potato starches rather than gelatine, dried and glazed with carnauba wax. The mould has to be deep and detailed, which makes them slower to produce than a flat sweet.
