Black Jacks are a test of character. A small, firm, individually wrapped chew with a bold aniseed flavour that some people adore and some people spit out, and a black colour that will be on your tongue for the rest of the afternoon. It softens as you chew and the aniseed never quite fades.
They're made by Barratt, who have been making them for the best part of a century, and the recipe is refreshingly simple: glucose, sugar, aniseed oil and vegetable carbon for the colour. No gelatine, which surprises a lot of people.
They're half of one of the great sweet shop pairings. Put them with Fruit Salads and you've built a bag from 1985. Add Liquorice Wheels and Aniseed Twists for a bag that only a liquorice lover would want.
Made without gelatine, so suitable for vegetarians. Not suitable for children under 36 months.
