What it is
The plain version of the cola bottle. Same bottle shape and same dark cola chew, without the sour sugar coating. Softer, sweeter and easier to eat by the handful, which is exactly why plenty of people prefer it.

Where it comes from
The plain cola bottle came first. German sweet makers began moulding cola flavoured gums in the 1920s, shaped like the bottles the drink was sold in, and the fizzy coated version only arrived decades later. In Britain the plain bottle has been a pick and mix staple since the 1970s and still outsells the fizzy one in some shops.
What it's made of
Glucose syrup and sugar set with corn starch rather than gelatine in a bottle mould, flavoured with a caramel and citrus cola blend, then given a light oil and wax glaze so they do not stick together.
